Previously before his time at Nintendo, Iwata San was a games programmer at HAL Laboratories, working on Balloon Fight, EarthBound and the Kirby series. He was promoted to the company's President in 1993 and although not officially part of Nintendo, aided in their programming of Pokemon Gold and Silver as well as Pokemon Stadium for the N64.
